Welcome messages

Prof. Marian Preda
University of Bucharest Rector

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the International Chemistry Tournament hosted by the University of Bucharest. This event reflects our unwavering commitment to science and high-quality education.

The University of Bucharest has a proud tradition in the field of chemistry, with notable contributions to both scientific discovery and education. Among our distinguished faculty, Professor Marius Andruh stands out for his outstanding pioneering work in in the field of inorganic chemistry, coordinative chemistry and molecular materials and our institution has been home to many other renowned scientists whose research continues to shape the global scientific landscape. Our achievements include significant discoveries in areas ranging from nanomaterials to sustainable chemical processes, further advancing the impact of chemistry on society.

Chemistry plays a fundamental role in driving innovation in a wide range of fields – be it the development of new medicines, the creation of sustainable materials or advances in food science. These innovations are the foundation for solving the global challenges we face today.

While we are proud of our academic history, we are also looking to the future by offering special scholarships to international Olympiad medalists who choose to study at our university. These scholarships support the brightest minds in science and provide opportunities for further growth and discovery.

I encourage you to take full advantage of the opportunities at the University of Bucharest, to get involved in our academic and research activities, and to help strengthen the tradition of chemistry in Romania. I wish you all the best of luck in the upcoming competitions and hope that your experience here will be both memorable and rewarding.

Thank you and have a successful tournament!

Acad. Marius Andruh
Vice-president of the Romanian Academy

Welcome to the 8th edition of the International Chemistry Tournament! Welcome to the University of Bucharest, the host of this event, in the city where the international olympiads for high school students were born. Indeed, the first International Mathematical Olympiad was launched by Romania in 1959. Since then, numerous Olympiads in various fields are organized all over the world, gathering enthusiastic students and stimulating their passion for science.

The new format, proposed by the Chemistry Tournament, is particularly interesting and inspiring, since it is focused on the creativity of the participants. Curiosity and creativity are two important qualities of a researcher that pave the way to disruptive innovation. Who knows, maybe some realistic and spectacular solutions for the challenging problems of this edition will be given for the first time by you. Beyond the answers to the topics discussed, students will have the opportunity to develop their communication and teamwork skills and learn to defend their own ideas.

I hope you will have an enriching and successful competition. May the best win!

About IChTo 2025

The International Chemistry Tournament (IChTo) is a team competition for high school students, with a format based on scientific debates starting from problems with open solutions. Having a novel approach in education, as compared to classical Olympiads, the accent is on both scientific and soft skills. As a result, creativity, teamwork, critical thinking, and public speaking are very important to succeed in this contest.
